Hi! I'm Ms. Kivett. I was born in Honduras. (Kudos if you know where Honduras is!) I have been teaching for 8 years with Orange County Public Schools. I have taught K, 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades. I have been teaching 2nd grade for the past 5 years.
From K-12, I attended the American School of Tegucigalpa. I moved to Orlando 16 years ago. I attended the University of Central Florida (UCF) and earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I am now pursuing my master's degree in Instructional Design and Technology at UCF. I am in the Educational Technology track.
If I weren't a teacher I don't know what I would be! Maybe I could be a cake decorator, or a mural painter, or an architect. I have so many interests and I believe that by being a teacher I can be a little bit of everything!

I am excited about the new changes coming with the introduction of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Florida. We are shifting from the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) into the CCSS to provide our students with a higher-quality education which will better prepare them for college and a highly competitive workforce. I believe by creating these opportunities for children in the classroom we can guide them into becoming independent, critical-thinkers who will be ready to compete in our global economy. Not only do we need to teach students how to use the tools to survive in a fast-paced world, but we also need to teach them how to choose the appropriate tools on their own. We can achieve this by using innovative ways to integrate real-life-type situations into our lessons. We also can't forget about the technological aspect of our ever-changing world. Our students were practically born with a computer in their hands. Therefore, we need to integrate technology into our lessons in every subject area to make learning more meaningful to them.
Through this blog I plan to provide you with an inside view of my personal educational experiences as a teacher in Florida. I would also love to hear from you and your teaching experiences in other parts of the country or even the world!
